View full detailsTom Dixon is named after the founder who is, of course, Tom Dixon. He was born on May 21, 1959 in Sfax, Tunisia. He rose to prominence in the mid and late 1980s, being known as a brilliant self taught designer. It was then that he designed the iconic 'S' chair for the Italian design company Cappellini.
Tom became even more renowned when he designed 'Jack', which he created for his own company called Eurolounge. In 1998 Tom became the head of design for the company Habitat. He eventually became the Creative Director until 2008, and was the public face of the team responsible for bringing back the Habitat brand.
Tom Dixon was founded in 2002 and is a British design and manufacturing company, based in Portobello, London. They create lighting and furniture with an emphasis on innovation and a mission to revive the British furniture industry. The companies inspiration is derived from Britain’s rich and unique heritage. Tom Dixon releases new collections annually at the Milan international furniture fair and at the London Design Festival, and have their products sold in over 60 countries world wide.
In 2004 Tom Dixon partnered up with the Swedish based private investment company called Proventus to establish Design Research, as design and product development company.
In 2007, Tom Dixon created the Design Research Studio. It is an interior and architectural design studio with high profile clientele such as Restaurant at The Royal Academy in London, Jamie Olover's London restaurant, Barbecoa, as well as Shoreditch House.
In most recent years, Design Research Studio announced their first ever hotel project. They will be redesigning the iconic Thames side Sea Containers House in collaboration with the US hotel Morgans Hotel Group. It is due to be completed in the summer of 2014.
When asked about his future plans for Milan, Italy, the design capital of the world, Tom had this to say: “We’re going to surprise everyone again by going to the fair for the first time. MOST was a lot of work, we did it for two years and it was very exciting. But it will be interesting to see what happens in a more commercial context.”
Tom Dixon is a brand that is based in British sensibility, and is creating its own identity as a label and a company. It is expanding and taking on greater design challenges everyday, and itself to be a company with resolve and staying power that will be seen more and more in years to come.
