The Acrilica 281 table lamp, created 1962 by Joe Colombo demonstrates the designer’s interest in synthetic materials. Colombo experienced extraordinary success in the 1960’s and his creations were already being exhibited I the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1969. Methacrylate, used for about a decade in the field of lighting, usually in thin sheets that are cut or thermoformed, found a very particular use here; its thickness and curve meant that thanks to its conduction properties, the light from a fluorescent lamp contained within the painted steel base moved through the transparent body, evenly lighting the head in an incredible way.
