Buying Guide for Modern Table Lamps

Modern table lamps do not just illuminate the room; they also add to the appeal and charm of the place. They are an important lighting fixture in just about any room in both modern residential or commercial settings. However, it is important that the table lamp you choose blends in with the interior décor of the place.

You can find a wide variety of table lamps that are suitable for different settings. The right table lamp can make your interior stand out, and give it a modern look. Here we will look at some of the things that you need to consider to select the perfect table lamp and the lights for your place for both task and accent lighting.

What factors should I consider when selecting a Table Lamp?

Table lamps come in different style, size, shape, color, and finishes. There is no one perfect table lamp. Your taste and personal preference will determine what type of lamp will be ideal for the place. Having said that, the style of the table lamp should match the interior home décor.

The goal should be to match the finishing of a table lamp with the furniture on which it will be placed. So, if your table has chrome finishing, you should select a table lamp with the same finishing. At the same time, you should avoid selecting a table lamp based on looks alone.

You should consider other factors when selecting a table lamp. If the table lamp is placed in a room where you watch TV, you should consider buying one with a dimmer. Also, a table lamp with a controlled and focused beam would be suitable here. By this, we mean a lamp with at least 30-degree beam that will direct light on the required surface and avoid sending stray light that will affect other activities. Generally, LED table lamps have the most directional and controlled beam since the LED lights are directional sources of light.

The LED table lamp will also be preferable when it will be on for more than 8 hours in a day. The reason is that LED bulbs do not burn out easily when used for a long period. They also consume less power that makes them a perfect option if you want the lighting fixture to be turned on for a long duration. The cost to run an LED table lamp would be a lot less using about one-fifth of the power as compared to halogen lamps.

Lamp shade shape is another consideration when buying a table lamp. You have a large variety when it comes to selecting the shape of the lamp shade. You can buy a table lamp with Abstract, Conical, Cylindrical, Dome, Drum, Globe, Multipoint, Rectangle, Round, and Square shape.

Lastly, the color of the table lamp should also be considered when buying the table lamp. The color of the table lamp must suit the interior design and décor of the house. Make sure that the lamp color blends in with the place otherwise it would look out of place and ungainly in the room.

How can I decide the right size and height of the table lamp?

The size of the table lamp for the room will depend on the size of the desk. If you have a large table, you should select a table lamp with a long arm so that it can reach across it.

An important consideration regarding the height of the table lamp is that the light source should be at the line of sight when sitting. To determine the right height, you should sit next to the table or the place where the table lamp will be placed and then measure the distance from the surface of the table to your eye level. The table-to-eye distance should be greater than the base-to-bottom of the shade length of the table lamp.

What is the Ideal Position to Place the Table Lamp?

A table lamp can be placed just about anywhere in the room on top of a table. You can place the table lamp on the dining table, reading table, side table, computer table, and even on the mantelpiece. Just make sure that you position the lamp in a way that you don’t get glare in your field of vision.

You can place the table lamps to illuminate areas of the room where there are shadows. When placing the table lamp, make sure that the area to be illuminated is about 36 inches away from the table lamp. However, in case the table lamp is tall, you need to allow for a distance of about two feet.

In case the lamp will be placed on a table containing a desktop computer, you must buy a table lamp whose light will reach the entire area. It is suggested that you buy a lamp with a clamp base such as the Tolomeo classic table lamp from Artemide. You can clamp this table lamp on your table top perfectly illuminating the work area.

How much light wattage do I need?

Table lamp comes in different wattages: the more the wattage, the more is the illumination. A question arises, what wattage is suitable for a room. The answer again depends on your personal preference. That being said, younger people generally require less wattage as compared to older people. So, if the lamp is placed on a desk used by younger people, you should use a less wattage table lamp. Older persons over the age of 50 require a table lamp that offers twice the brightness as compared to a younger person.

Below is a table that can help you determine what wattage of the table lamp is ideal for different age group.

What is the Difference between Task and Ambient Table Lamp?

Proper lighting is important for any room whether at work or in the home. The two main types of table lamps include task table lamps and ambient table lamps. A good lighting design is composed of both task and ambient lighting.

Task table lamps are used to provide lighting for a specific task such as reading, cooking, sewing, and performing work. These lighting fixtures have either adjustable or fixed arm. The task table lamp provides localized lighting directing the light to a specific location. It offers the correct amount of light exactly at the place where it is needed in a room. The beam of light of the task table lamp is directed on the surface highlighting the area where you are working, reading, sewing, cooking, or using a computer.

The beam spread is an important thing to keep in mind when selecting a table lamp. If you want to use the task table lamp on a table where you read a book, the beam spread can be smaller. However, if you use the table lamp on a table where you draw floor plans, the beam spread should be larger. The best option in this regard is the LED table lamps that allow you to select the beam spread as required.

At this point, you should not confuse task lighting with task table lamp. Task lighting can be anything from vanity light, spotlight, pendants lights etc. Task table lamp are a type of task lighting that relate to lamps placed on a table, desk or cabinet.

The other main type of table lamp includes the ambient table lamps. These table lamps are not used for a particular task. Instead, they are used for general illumination of the room. The lamps serve as a background light supplementing the main room lighting. These lighting are mainly used for display purposes instead of fulfilling illumination needs.

What about Color Temperature of the Table Lamp?

Color temperature describes the visual appearance of the light. It is measured in Kelvin and ranges from about 1,000 K to 10,000 K. Generally, the temperature in the range of 2,500 K to 3,000 K looks warm/soft white, 3,500 to 4,100 K appears bright or cool white, and 5,000 K to 6,500 K is considered daylight.

Warm or soft color temperature feel soothing and make the room appear nice. Bright or cool colors are suitable for areas where there is a need for increased productivity as it stimulates the brain. This color is ideally suited for office desk lamps. For desk lamps placed in bedrooms, living rooms and dens the ideal color range is 2,500 K to 3,000 K. Table lamps with a color range of 3,500 K to 4,100 K are suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces. For reading areas the perfect color temperature is 5,000 K to 6,500 K

What are the different types of Table Lamp light bulbs?

You can buy table lamps with halogen, incandescent, fluorescent, and LED bulbs. These light bulbs differ in the amount of brightness as well as the power consumed to generate the illumination.

Incandescent bulbs generate light when an electric current is passed through a wire filament. These bulbs get heated up easily if used for a long duration.

Halogen bulbs are similar to the incandescent bulbs but use less power. The bulbs consist of a filament that is heated to the point where it starts glowing. Similar to the incandescent bulbs, they get hot when used for a longer period of time.

Fluorescent bulbs emit light when electricity is applied through a tube filled with mercury vapor. The tubes have a coating inside that converts the ultraviolet light into visible light.

Finally, there are the LED light bulbs that emit light when electrical current is passed through a light emitting diode. Since the heat is absorbed into a heat sink, the LED bulbs do not get hot even when the lamp is on for long durations.

Of the above, fluorescent and LED light bulbs is the most energy-efficient. These light bulbs consume far less power as compared to incandescent and halogen bulbs. A fluorescent and LED bulb can save up to 75 percent to 80 percent in energy bills, respectively. These bulbs also last for years without needing replacement.

What is the best bulb type in terms of value for money?

When it comes to value for money, LED bulbs are the best option. A LED bulb only emits one-fifth of the heat of an incandescent or halogen bulb. Since the LED bulb generates less heat they require less energy thereby saving on the energy bill. Also, you won’t burn yourself if you accidentally place the hand on the bulb.

Another reason why LED table lamps are the best choice is that LED bulbs generally have a greater lifespan. A typical LED bulb lasts for about 50,000 hours. This means that if the table lamp is on for 7 hours every day, you need to change an LED bulb every 20 years. In contrast, halogen bulbs that have a typical lifestyle of about 2,000 hours will need to be replaced every year.
