Now, more than ever, we are spending more time outdoors relaxing, entertaining, and quite simply...living. Why not create spaces that are an extension of our interiors? One way to make a statement and create a sophisticated outdoor environment is through your selection of lighting. Yes, I know the idea of lighting seems a bit of a snore because it is typically looked at as something that you need
in order to see when the sun goes down. Oh my gosh, lighting is so much more than that! It speaks to who we are, our interests, and our personal style. If lighting, by it's utilitarian nature, makes all the difference in a space; why wouldn't your choice of style of lighting do the same? Hmmm...just a little something to think about!
Lighting is oftentimes overlooked when designing an outdoor area, and as an afterthought, we will overdo it with the addition of candles. Now, don't get me wrong, I think candles are great and nothing can quite come close to the soft luminous glow of them. However, there are many options in lighting that can yield the same results as candles and make more or an aesthetic impact. This is an opportunity to select lighting that will not only illuminate the area, but also be an object of curiosity and interest, as well as a work of art! Consider the furnishings and other elements in the space and choose lighting that will be functional for the activities that will take place there; but then think about the details that you would like to make a feature in the evening hours. Really get creative with your lighting placement! Instead of doing one singular fixture, why not do a cluster or a nice composition arranged to make a striking visual impact whether the sun is up or down!
When designing your outdoor space, the same considerations should be taken as when you were creating your interiors: (1) How will the space be used? (2) When will the space be used most? (3) What type of mood, feel, and experience should the space reflect? Once these three simple questions are answered, then you are better able to determine what type of lighting is best. Push the envelope when it comes to your lighting selections and really make a bold statement! Do it with no fear! Choose what you are drawn to, for whatever the reason, it will be perfect because it is inevitably an extension of who you are and make for an amazing story to tell! Afterall, that is what our spaces are...storytellers! Make it AMAZING! Rhonda *AWL.14 Wall Sconce; TXL Suspension
