LED, which is an abbreviation for Light Emitting Diode, is a semiconductor device which converts electricity into light. The most notable feature of these devices is their high energy efficiency. Compared to incandescent and halogen lights, LEDs use 75% less energy which results in a significant decrease in your electricity bills. Another worth mentioning feature of these bulbs is increased lifespan.

Functioning

An LED bulb is based on the SSL or Solid State Lighting technology. A solid material is used for emitting light whereas in other technologies, light is emitted from vacuum. This solid material is a semiconductor material, which comprises of a positive and a negative end. The positive charge is because of the absence of electrons, formally known as holes, whereas the negative charge is induced because of free electrons.

Now when this semiconductor material is charged, a flow of electrons is created from the negative to the positive end. As these electrons take up their positions at the positive end, the emit light.

Energy Savings

LED bulbs have energy efficiency levels and help you save a significant amount of money in terms of your utility bills. Residential LEDs use only 30% of the power used by other light bulbs.

Studies claim that by the year 2027, LEDs will have helped in saving nearly 348 TWh of electricity. This much electricity is the amount that is produced from 44 huge power plants, each rated at 1,000 megawatts. This will result in savings greater than $30 billion.

Longevity

LEDs are known for their durability. Regular bulbs operate for only 1,500 hours whereas LEDs have a lifetime of nearly 60,000 hours. They can easily be used for seven years without any need of replacement.

On an average, the lifespan of an LED bulb is 10 times more than fluorescent bulbs and 25 times greater than incandescent lighting.

Durability

LEDs are made from sturdy materials that can be exposed to extreme conditions. As such, they offer a resistant to vibration, shock, and external impact. They are not affected by rain, wind, and other severe weather conditions.

Environmental Impact

LEDs are manufactured from nontoxic substances that do not threaten the environment. They can also be recycled and can reduce carbon footprint by 33%.

Uses

LED lights have many applications in various industries. These include residential lighting, automotive, electronic instrumentation, military industry, and other sectors. They are used in a number of different forms such as security lights, night-lights, spotlights, desk lamps, and so on.
