Dining table lighting

For the best dining table lighting, luminaries hould be selected to suit the size and design of the tables. Round or oval, square or rectangular - there is a wide variety of luminaires available for any shape of table. Also possible is an arrangement of several small luminaires mirroring the shape of the table, e.g. a circular group over a round dining surface. For long tables, a row of pendant luminaires is a recommended option.

Pendant luminaries - are a good solution for this lighting task - a flexible solution if they are designed for variable height adjustment. The positioning of the luminarie(s), their design and the way they distribute light should be determined by the table top. Other possibilities are wire and rod systems or power track with luminaires suspended over the table. The ideal dining table luminaire - around 60 centimetres above the table - illuminates the table top and the surrounding area without causing glare. Supplementary lighting provided by standard luminaries, wall luminaries or table luminaries is not only nice to look at; it also improves perception of the room as a whole.Separately switched luminaires and dimmable lighting enable the lighting atmosphere to be adjusted to suit a particular visual task or occasion.

Where a pull-out table is extended to full length, the normal table lighting is generally no longer enough. This problem is solved by wire and rod or power track systems: designed to suit the table when it is fully extended, they enable additional luminaires spots from elsewhere in the lighting system to be positioned over the table whenever they are needed. Where we look around from a brightly lit table and our gaze falls on a largely dark room, the homely atmosphere of that room is lost. To avoid this, more luminaries should be used to illuminate the surrounding areas of the room. These should be on separate switching circuits and dimmable. For a balanced, agreeable lighting atmosphere, dining table lighting needs to be supplemented by at least two more luminaires. The selection of models available is vast and caters to all tastes and furnishings: table or pedestal luminaries for sideboard or side table, standard or wall luminaries .Spotlit pictures - illuminated from the ceiling or by picture lights - or illuminated display cabinets also help the room make a livelier impression.

For those fond of indirect lighting, uplights are the alternative: here, light directed onto the ceiling (and walls) by at least one standard luminaire or several wall luminaires is reflected into the room, where it contributes indirectly to the room lighting. Another alternative: wire and rod systems or power track throughout the dining room.

More information - Modern Dining table lighting

The brilliant warm-white light of standard-voltage or low-voltage tungsten halogen lamps is a popular choice. Alternatives, apart from ordinary tungsten filament lamps, are energy-saving lamps or compact fluorescent lamps (light colour: warm white). These lamps all have very good color rendering properties.

Recipes for good lighting: flexible and low-glare

Light stimulates appetite: whether we sit down to a papaya salad in a Thai restaurant or share a spaghetti al’ arrabiata with friends at home, we need good lighting to enjoy the meal to the full. Because the domestic dining table is also used between meals for other activities, such as playing games or working, Fördergemeinschaft Gutes Licht (FGL) recommends a flexible lighting solution here: height-adjustable pendant luminaires with dimmer control.

The ideal lighting set-up distributes light over the whole tabletop and raises the illuminance of the area around it. Luminaires which suit the size and shape of the table are a particularly suitable choice. Innumerable designs are available; the range of options is wide. A multiple arrangement of smaller luminaires can also provide lighting tailored to the shape of the table. For long tables, several luminaires in a row are the best solution.

No interference with eye contact

The basic rule is that, to avoid glare caused by direct visual contact with the lamp, the luminaire should be suspended around 60 centimetres above the table; the lampshade is thus just above eye level. This is the only way to ensure there is no interference with direct eye contact between persons at the table. Between meals, the luminaire can be set at different heights to meet the needs of other activities performed at the table. Dimmer control allows the brightness of the lighting to be fine‑tuned to requirements.

For pull-out tables extended to full length, a single luminaire is generally not enough. Excellent solutions here are furnished by wire, rod or power track systems, which enable supplementary luminaires or spots to be mounted over the table in temporary arrangements defined by the largest dimension of the tabletop. Wave-design or circular rod systems have a particularly interesting visual impact.

A cosy atmosphere is ensured by warm-white light, e.g. provided by line-voltage or low-voltage tungsten halogen lamps. Alternatives are warm-white general-service tungsten filament lamps, energy-saving lamps or compact fluorescent lamps. These lamps have very good colour rendering properties, so they present culinary delicacies in an appetising light.

More than light for eating

Dining tables need flexible lighting

On dark winter evenings it becomes strikingly apparent that the dining table is the heart of the home – a place where cosy hours are spent with family or friends, a place where games are played, where the newspaper is read, where the occasional office work is done on the laptop. To cater for all the different situations that arise, lighting needs to be flexible.

For dining tables, Fördergemeinschaft Gutes Licht recommends luminaires that radiate all or most of their light as direct light. Depending on the size of the table, more than one luminaire may be required. Whether this is the case or not, however, luminaire positioning, luminaire shape and beam spread should ideally correspond to the shape of the table. The recommended distance between luminaire and tabletop is around 60 centimetres, which is just above eye level for someone sitting at the table. This ensures that no one is dazzled but everyone can see everyone else well.

Dimmable and height-adjustable

Variable design features provide the necessary flexibility: a dimmer allows the lighting level to be raised for reading and writing or lowered for an intimate chat. Because the 60 centimetre rule is not necessarily right for all situations, an infinitely adjustable pendant luminaire is the recommended solution: this enables the light to be set at any height above the table as required. Where more than one luminaire is used, a wire, rod or power track system has advantages. Like other solutions, it permits the use of height-adjustable luminaires; unlike them, it enables extra luminaires or spots to be added for special occasions – e.g. when a pull‑out table is extended to full length.

Harmonious brightness distribution in the room is vital for ensuring visual performance and visual comfort, so monotonous brightness and murky darkness are both wrong. Ambient lighting in the background is provided by uplights, recessed luminaires, table or standard luminaires – in variable constellations and/or different dimmed states.
